MARSHALL: Christmas Backpacks

Picture
One of the ways you can help with the relief efforts following Hurricane Helene is to provide families with the opportunity to celebrate Christmas this year by filling a backpack with age appropriate items and sending the backpack as a donation.  Each backpack donated will be distributed to families on Thanksgiving Day in Marshall, NC as part of the "PROJECT: Thanksgiving in Marshall."

The button below is a "Backpack Checklist" for you to print and take with you as you shop for and fill these Christmas Backpacks!
BACKPACK CHECKLIST

ITEMS TO COLLECT:
All backpacks and their content should be new.  Used clothing can be donated, but not as part of the Christmas Backpacks.
  • A Zippered Backpack: Choose a backpack that is appropriate for the age and gender of the backpack's content.  You can pick up a free backpack in the lobby of the Lowe's YMCA in Mooresville while supplies last (100 backpacks have been donated).
  • Bible: The most important item to include is a Bible.  There are many children and youth Bibles from which to choose.  No particular version is required.  Here are two recommendations: Kids (Ages 4-10) & Youth (Ages 11-17).  These have over 300 highlighted Scripture passages that remind the children and youth that God loves them!
  • Warm Clothing: Pack a winter cap, gloves, 2-3 pairs of socks, and scarf.
  • Canned Food (3-4 cans): Pack metal cans with a pop-top that doesn't require a can opener.  Recommended canned items include: Spaghettios, vegetables, & fruit.
  • Age-Appropriate Toys: Pack at least one toy.  For example: toy cars, doll, Lego, Slinky, or stuffed animals.
  • Age-Appropriate Games: Pack at least one game.  For example: a card game, puzzle, jump rope, sidewalk chalk, or ball.
  • Toiletries: Pack such hygiene items as toothbrush, soap, washcloth, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, and a brush/comb.  Avoid "travel-size" toiletries, but fit all of the items on a one-gallon Ziploc bag to prevent the items from leaking in the backpack.
  • Candy: Pack wrapped candy.  Avoid chocolate or peanut products.  The chocolate melts and the peanuts have allergy risks.
